UGA Basketball Makes “A Huge Step” To Become Relevant

As Georgia’s Mark Fox was anxiously waiting to learn if his Bulldogs has been selected for the NCAA Tournament, his boss had some words of encouragement for him.

AD Greg McGarity says he told Fox: “What you’ve go to look at is the big picture.  Whether you’re in or out, we’ve kind of made a huge step in our program by being relevant.  And to be relevant you have to play in the postseason.”

As Seth Emerson of The Macon Telegraph points out, Fox and the Dawgs didn’t need a pick-me-up speech as they were indeed selected for The Big Dance.  This season marks the first time in nine years that UGA has earned an at-large bid to the tourney.  And that trip nine years ago was vacated in the aftermath of the Jim Harrick scandal.

McGarity is pleased to see the Dawgs back in the NCAAs.  “That’s the goal of any program when you’re really starting over and you’ve gone through so many years of not really being in the position to go to a postseason. … To have a program established, you’ve got to kind of break that door down.  And playing in that tournament.  You’ve got to kind of get over that hump.”
