Top Five Wide Receiver Signees For 2011

We’ve seen plenty of instant impact wide receivers in recent years.

A.J. Green (Georgia), Julio Jones (Alabama), Alshon Jeffery (South Carolina) and Justin Hunter (Tennessee) all made instant impacts in the last three years.

Who might be next?

Here are the top five wide receiver signees in the SEC in February:

1. Jarvis Landry – LSU

He might be the top player at his position from the Southeast. Landry committed to LSU early in the process, joining a talented in-state group that includes tailback Kenny Hilliard and defensive tackle Anthony Johnson. Junior receiver Rueben Randle is expected to take a big step next year for LSU. Landry could be a nice complement to Randle this fall.

2. Nickolas Brassell – Ole Miss

His recruitment came down to the wire, and the Rebels were ecstatic that Brassell chose to stay in state and play for Ole Miss. The Rebels need more weapons on offense, and Brassell, who played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl, should provide that. He is a part of a deep and talented freshman receiver class in Oxford (which we’ll mention again later).

3. DeAnthony Arnett – Tennessee

Arnett was one of the early big commitments for UT coach Derek Dooley and he should be a nice option as a slot receiver to go along with Justin Hunter and rising sophomore wide receiver Da’Rick Rogers. Arnett is a confident player who will have to compete with several other wideouts for playing time, but UT’s staff is hopeful he can be an early impact player on offense.

4. Bradley Sylve – Alabama

Sylve is similar to the other top receivers in this class. He’s a playmaker, and Alabama is looking for immediate help at receiver because of the loss of Julio Jones to the NFL. The Crimson Tide signed tailback Dee Hart, who made last week’s top five running backs list, and Sylve should provide a similar spark for Alabama on the outside. Sylve and fellow incoming receiver Marvin Shinn could play key roles in the Crimson Tide’s attempt to return to the top of the SEC.

5. Donte Moncrief – Ole Miss

The Rebels have two receivers on this list, which means coach Houston Nutt did his job well with this 2011 class. The Rebels didn’t have enough offensive firepower last year. Moncrief (6-2, 210) adds some nice size to the Ole Miss offense to go along with Brassell and several other receiver signees, including Tobias Singleton. Will they help the Rebels complete a quick turnaround this fall? Nutt sure hopes so.
