Smith Not Going To The Hogs

Yesterday, The Fort Worth Star-Telegram reported that Minnesota coach Tubby Smith was “close” to being hired by Arkansas.

We linked you to that report, but we also pointed out that Smith has been in contract negotiations with the Gophers on an extension.  We showed you a comment from Smith — “I’m going to finish my career here” — and asked if that sounded like a man preparing to pick up stakes again and move at age 59?

Turns out, it still sounds to us — and to many others today — like Smith is very much a smokescreen in the Arkansas search.  Minnesota’s coach said during his weekly radio show last night if he expected to return to the Gophers next year.  “Yes I do.”

The coach also said that he is continuing to work on a two-year extension with the school’s athletic director.  On that front, we wouldn’t be surprised to learn that reps for Smith might have leaked the Arkansas story to drive up the value of their client.

Either way, it’s hard to picture Smith moving again at this stage in his career.  And Arkansas fans might not be thrilled with bringing in a man who lost 10 of his last 11 games last year.  Razorback AD Jeff Long might not want to bring in a 59-year-old either for fear of having to go through the hiring process again in just five or six years.

Never say never, but this one sounded fishy to begin with… and even fishier now.

Uninformed, clueless basketball fans from MN with unrealistic expectations want Tubby Smith to leave. The rest of the people, who are back here on planet earth, appreciate coach Smith and what he'd done to our program. Think of pre-tubby seasons. Highlights involved watching our big men shoot half court jump shots and getting a good laugh in (thanks Spencer); but now, we actually expect to win 20 games per season (compared to 9) and to see great recruiting classes year in year out. People forget that building a program takes time, and we've put in the foundations of a solid program. Two years in a row being in the top 25, even if we did fall back out eventually, is a huge improvement over what we had. This year, we could've been top 10 if we didn't lose our two veteran guards.

I don't know what people expect? Do you want to see Tubby yelling in the face of his Freshman guards because we're not winning? They're freshman, come on guys, they weren't recruited to be starters at this age. There's only so much he can do from the sideline, veteran players have to take responsibility of these losses as well as the coach.

In a nutshell: we're happy to have him as a coach and should not even be considering letting him go. Don't listen to moron fans.

More to your point & interest, I really question why Arkansas would want him. While you'd have that "big name" coach with NCAA tourney experience, I'm very sure you could do better with a young coach, "up & coming", with a demonstrated record of wins. And you'd likely get him for less that the 1.8 million Minnesota is presently paying Tubby.

Good luck Razorback fans - you have a historic program you can be proud of!

The local media in Minneapolis is pretty much discounting Tubby going anywhere, but they are talking about it. He's in the middle of negotiating a 2 yr extension on his contract. Fan support has taken a significant hit since this years team, which beat NC & WV & was once ranked as high as 13, lost their point guard Nolen, and lost 10 of their last 11 games. I'm reasonably sure Smith has another 2 years left here if he wants them, but he'll have to start producing - better recruits & a B10 finish in the top 4 or 5 or he'll be shown to the door... he is on borrowed time. I personally have very mixed feelings about Smith. On the one hand he has been successful where ever he's gone, and I sure his name helps recruiting. Unfortunately, besides just bad luck with injuries & off court player issues, his coaching is suspect: dated & shaky. His players do not improve each season as you would expect. His offense has very little movement or thought to it, and he wants a slow down game, regardless of his player talent. This year many of his players pretty much quit on him the last couple of games. It was a very disappointing season here!

Not FISHY..... more like, FISHING. Tubby and his agent are simply making a stand with the U of M amd we all know it's just business. In my opinion Tubby Smith is a god send for the U of M. He has established a certain style here again and has made sure the "players" students are just that..... students first! Lets face it... losing the last 10 of 11 isnt waht I would call a good finish, however, when a team has lost it's two top players for most of the year it don't take a rocket scientist to figure the ending wouldnt be very good, and worse yet.... these were poth point guards.... the so called floor generals. I predict if Tubby can somehow get the great players from his own backyard to saty in state.... the future looks wonderful.. keep up the good work Tubby,, we lov ya here in the great state of Minnesota! GO GOPHERS!!!!!

Not everyone in Minnesota agrees with the above comment -I am a Minnesota fan in Minneapolis and would be the happiest person on the planet if there were some way to get rid of Tubby without paying him off. He has been a proven loser and program destroyer everywhere he's been. This season was a disaster - and proof that Tubby is over the hill and no longer effective. The guy is also a lying greedy scum, who blamed everyone but himself for the collapse this year. He is trying to leverage all these rumors to get another contract, and that also proves he is dishonest. He is vastly overpaid for the poor perfromance and if the MN AD had a brain he would fire Tubby now.
