Lunardi Puts Four SEC Squads In Big Dance

This year’s NCAA Tournament has what experts are calling a “soft bubble.”  Meaning: After the “must get in” teams, there’s a considerable drop off when you get to the teams fighting for the last few slots.  There just aren’t that many good teams competing for bids.  But that’s not necessarily good news for the SEC.

ESPN.com’s Joe Lunardi is to the NCAA Tournament what Mel Kiper is to the NFL draft — a self-made guru who created and pushed an industry where none had existed before.  Lunardi came to fame as the guy who could correctly pick the NCAA field before the selection committee extended its actual invitations.

And Lunardi is not impressed by the SEC.

In his latest mock bracket, Lunardi has only four Southeastern Conference squads getting berths in the field.  Alabama and Georgia are among his “first four out” of the tourney.  Below are his current views on where Florida, Kentucky, Tennessee and Vanderbilt will be seeded on Selection Sunday:

Florida
3 seed vs 14 seed Long Island in East Regional
Next Round: winner of 6 seed Texas A&M and 11 seed Clemson

Kentucky
4 seed vs 13 seed College of Charleston in Southeast Regional
Next Round: winner of 5 seed West Virginia and 12 seed Butler

Vanderbilt
6 seed vs 11 seed Michigan in Southwest Regional
Next Round: winner of 3 seed San Diego State and 14 seed Indiana State

Tennessee
9 seed vs 8 seed Missouri in East Regional
Next Round: winner of 1 seed Ohio State and 16 seed Bethune-Cookman or Middle Tennessee (from play-in game)
