Is Bama’s Grant Really Interested In UT Job?

File this one under: We’ll believe it when we see it.  Subheading: Contract ploy.

Since Bruce Pearl’s ouster, Anthony Grant’s name has popped several times in connection with Tennessee’s vacancy.  A source inside the UT athletic department told The Knoxville News Sentinel that Grant is one of five coaches on the Vols’ wish list.  Multiple sources have said that he has expressed interest in the Tennessee job — as well as the Georgia Tech job — through back channels.

Now — the Rivals site covering Tennessee — has revealed a bit more info.  Grant has interest in the job, the site reports, but like us, they aren’t sure “how serious Grant may be” due to the uncertain status of AD Mike Hamilton and the Vols’ current NCAA worries.  According to the site, Grant has indicated to some that he’s not interested at all.  (Want more?  Gotta buy a subscription.)

Perhaps Grant is interested.  Tennessee’s facilities are better than Bama’s and the Vols have packed Thompson-Boling Arena with 20,000+ fans.  UT’s support for hoops trumps Alabama’s hoops support.  Plus, Pearl was a bigger star in Knoxville than either Lane Kiffin or Derek Dooley.  Think Grant will ever move out of Nick Saban’s shadow?

But it’s awfully hard to believe Grant would take an interest in UT — or Georgia Tech, for that matter — for any other reason than to drive up his price in Tuscaloosa.  Grant has leverage following his team’s surprising turnaround in 2010-11.  There’s no better time to flirt or leak word of flirting than when your value is on the rise.  Grant’s is.

We’re firm believers in never saying never, but in this instance, we’d be shocked if Grant made a somewhat lateral move to land at a school that will go on NCAA probation shortly after his arrival.
