Calipari’s Win Over Florida On Saturday Was NOT His 500th

John Calipari won his 500th game as a college head coach when Kentucky knocked off Florida on Saturday.

Sort of.

While Calipari has indeed left a college basketball court a winner on 500 occasions, not all of those wins still go on his resume.  Gary Johnson, the head of Division I men’s basketball statistics has told The Lexington Herald-Leader that Coach Cal is actually 42 wins shy of 500 in the NCAA’s eyes.

Calipari’s final UMass squad was forced to vacate four postseason wins in the 1995-96 season (costing the Minutemen a Final Four appearance).  The coach’s final Memphis squad was forced to vacate 38 victories from its 2007-2008 season (costing the Tigers a Final Four appearance).

Add it up and you get 42.  Which means UK jumped the gun a bit when it presented Calipari with a gameball celebrating his 500th victory on Saturday.

But hang on to it, folks.  It shouldn’t take too long for Calipari to record another 42 wins in Lexington.

Cat fans hated Cal and called him a cheater when he was at Memphis, I live smack in the middle of Wildcat Country and know it for a fact...that is til he jumped the ship and headed over to U of K...then they sold their souls...hahahaha

I don't think Calipari is a cheater. How can a coach be there 100% of the time to police his players. Does anyone actually think that Calipari encouraged Camby to get an agent before the end of the season??? Cal actually was the 1st to report that violation...of course, the Cal haters cry that he only did so because he was already caught...back up...do you think Cal actually encouraged Camby to prematurely get an agent? Cal is 100% clean on that whole matter.

Yeah, and it's too funny to read all the UK fans comments about how Pearl got caught cheating and how there is no proof that Calipari ever cheated. Hello, take off your big blue blinders Cats fans! The proof that Calipari cheated is the in the fact that the NCAA took two final fours from him and 42 wins at two different schools!

Cal...

Actually, Calipari's UMass team was stripped of four wins because Marcus Camby had been given benefits by an agent. And Memphis lost its wins because Derrick Rose -- who had been initally okayed by the NCAA Clearinghouse -- was later charged (basically) with cheating on his SAT (by having someone else take it for him). Calipari was not mentioned in either investigation.

As we've noted on this site many, many times, Calipari is the king of plausible deniability. Certainly it doesn't reflect well on a captain when he's had two ships sink on his watch. But Calipari actually remains clean when it comes to cheating accusations.

Thanks for reading,
John

I guess that both the schools, Memphis and UMass had administrations that just happened to cheat at the same time Calipari was there and that was just a coincidence? Too much smoke for there not to be a fire there. That is like somebody getting a job at two different locations and the first one burns down and it is considered arson, then the same person gets a job at another location and it burns down too and it is considered arson also. The police are most likely going to investigate and more than likely tie the two together and get some evidence on the arsonist. At least that's the way it usually works in the real world, not sure about the NCAA's world?

Admin had nothing to do with Camby. It was a dude in Connecticut.

Cal...

Calipari lives in the grey areas of the rulebook. No one can deny that. But he's not been accused of cheating by the NCAA. As I stated, having two programs get axed on his watch looks pretty darn bad and I think it puts a deserved stain on his reputation. But he and his schools have not been hit with rules violations. One had an ineligible player due to an agent's involvement and one had an ineligible player who cheated on the SAT in high school.

For fans of UK to suggest that Calipari is as clean as a newborn babe is to ignore common sense. But for fans of other programs to claim Calipari has been guilty of cheating is to ignore the facts.

Calipari is Mr. Plausible Deniability. If he's a criminal, he's Michael Corleone. Underlings might fall and his past schools might wind up with voided seasons, but nothing traces directly back to the man on top.

That's not a defense of the man, just a statement of facts.

Again, thanks for reading,
John
