Alabama’s QB Race Under Way

Nick Saban is looking for a quarterback.  But he knows exactly what he’s NOT looking for, too.

“I’ve seen it in the NCAA Tournament — I’ve watched a few of those games — and a guy is supposed to be a good player,” Saban told The Montgomery Advertiser.  “All of a sudden, he comes down and forces two shots that he has no business taking and it hurts his team.”

“Only because he feels like, ‘I don’t have any points and I’m supposed to have lots of points, so I’m going to go take a shot, no matter what.”

In other words, Saban wants someone with a lust for the right play, not necessarily the big play.  Invest in a drive.  Don’t gamble away opportunities chasing long-shot plays.

So who will have the steadiest hand in spring drills?  AJ McCarron, the presumed starter, or Phillip Sims or someone else?  McCarron has a reputation for being “a brash gunslinger who feels he can thread every needle,” while Sims “was more of a careful game manager in high school.”

In other words, fans would want McCarron, but Saban might prefer Sims.  If McCarron takes too many chances with the football.  In the end, Saban told TideSports.com that everything will come down to avoiding mistakes.

Asked what he’s looking for from his QBs, the coach said: “Decision-making and judgement, psychological disposition toward taking what the defense gives you rather than trying to make big plays and forcing plays, which is sometimes the mentality of good players.  Take what the defense gives you, and that’s how we’ll move the ball and be successful.  And that’s how we’ll function best as a team.  But you can’t take them and make them when they’re not there.”
