Tourney Resumes From Across The SEC

Five bids.  That’s all we at MrSEC.com see the SEC earning in terms of NCAA Tournament berths.  Below we explain why.  As part of our SEC tourney resumes, we include the following information:

* Current RPI ranking — a biggie when selecting the field

* Overall record

* Conference record

* Strength of schedule — another biggie

* Record in last 12 games — not as important as it used to be

* Record vs RPI Top 50 — another biggie

* Record vs RPI Top 100 — no team has received an at-large bid with
less than three

* Record vs RPI Top 200 — only two teams in the last 17 years have earned bids when under .500 in this category

Here’s how things stack up going into Tuesday’s night’s action:

Observations:

* Florida is playing for a #2 seed in the tournament.  Currently most bracketologists project them as a #3, but if they finish strong and do well in the SEC tourney, the Gators’ record versus top 50, 100 and 200 RPI teams should earn them a #2.

* The RPI says Kentucky is slightly better than Vanderbilt.  The eye test says Vandy has been more consistent.  Don’t be surprised to see UK get a higher seed based on “name value,” but the nod should go to Kevin Stallings’ team if one squad has to be seeded higher than the other.

* Speaking of the eye test, Alabama might not get in, but they look to be a better team — and a more dangerous tourney team — than either Tennessee or Georgia at the moment.  In our view, Bama should be in and Tennessee and Georgia should be fighting for the league’s fifth and final at-large berth.

* If Alabama doesn’t get in, Tide fans shouldn’t cry too loudly.  Bama has looked good of late and they’ve held their own against the SEC East (3-1 so far).  But UA is hampered by playing in the sad sack SEC West (two games a pop against RPI dogs Arkansas, MSU, LSU and Auburn) and they padded their pre-conference schedule with 11 games against foes ranked outside the RPI top 100 (seven against teams outside the top 200).  That kind of scheduling can backfire.
