The Nutbags Strike Back: Updyke’s Family Gets Death Threats

Shock of shocks, the quacky act of Harvey Updyke — “Al from Dadeville” on “The Paul Finebaum Show” — has flushed out a few more crazies.  The family of the man who poisoned Auburn’s oak trees now claims to be receiving death threats from Tiger fans.  And I don’t doubt it for a second.

“We have children and grandchildren getting death threats from Auburn fans,” a man claiming to be Updyke’s son told The Mobile Press-Register.  “We’re having to pull teenagers, 13- and 14-year-old kids, out of school because people are threatening them.”

Who didn’t see this coming?  In fact, we said yesterday morning that this type of nonsense — from the other side of the rivalry — was to be expected.  Heck, everyone knew this was coming.

Finebaum told ESPN.com’s Mark Schlabach that he expects the UA-AU rivalry to become even more heated following Updyke’s attack on Toomer’s Corner.  “I almost hate to say what I should say — that perhaps I’m surprised we haven’t seen anything worse.  I think it will get worse.  I really do.”

Hey, nutjobs, here’s how you lose sympathy in a situation like this: You make death threats against innocent people.  Those oak trees were a symbol of Auburn University and AU fans have every right to be sad, mad and disgusted.  But they were trees.  Threatening to kill people is not a proportional response.  The best response, of course, would be to do nothing except buck up, move forward and show clowns like Updyke that they can’t get under your skin.

As for Updyke, he has a daughter named Crimson and a son named Bear.  His son — not sure if it was “Bear” or not –  said that his father has a pacemaker and suffers from kidney failure, high blood pressure and diabetes, and is on 21 different medications.  He also said his 62-year-old father is being treated like “a rapist or a murderer… he hasn’t been convicted yet.”

He hasn’t been convicted, but he did call a nationally syndicated radio show to say that he killed the trees.  And that he didn’t care if the act was illegal.  Good look to his court-appointed attorney beating that one.

In addition, WAAY-TV in Huntsville, Alabama reports that Updyke has been arrested twice before — in 1996 (criminal mischief) and in 2004 (theft).

UPDATEKevin Scarbinsky of The Birmingham News writes that “clean, old fashioned hate in this state has started to give way to a more dangerous level of contempt.”  The writer concludes: “Sadly, those trees may be beyond saving.  Let’s hope the rivalry itself isn’t too far gone.”

Hmmm. There are two lifeforms on the planet. One is a repeated killer, the other just lives out its life providing nutrients to others. Which one is superior to the other? Hmmmm.

Wonder what an objective visitor from another planet would say?

Sorry, I need more proof than two offsprings of Harvey named "Crimson" and "Bear" just saying they received death threats. What else are they going to say to try to get any sympathy? Why would Auburn fans have a problem with the kids? It isn't their fault their father is a raving lunatic. And for all you idiots to just take an article and believe it word for word... seriously?

Anyway, about this article...Did they really think that the AU lunatics wouldn't do something? Every team has their fair share of "rednecks" or "lunatics" and they should have known that people would do something. The teenagers...not a story... I would have kept my kids out of school or made sure that their classmates were told not to say a word to them about what was going on with their grandfather. One person's actions shouldn't be pinned on their family. This guy obviously has some issues. Anyway, go dawgs!

Correction: My last comment was directed to Jim, as well as Coriander.

Coriander, our 13 were definately as "fair & square" as your 2 which both have a question marks beside them. First of which was a tie, school was called Alabama Polytechnic ( not Auburn ) & the school was under sanctions for paying players. Which brings us to this year. Deja Vu! No sanctions yet, but investigation is still ongoing. Maybe you should check your history as well! But this is not about you or your ignorant comments. It's about the horrible actions of one psycho. It was a terrible thing but it wasn't ordered by the University. And I don't know any Bama fans who are happy about this or condone it in any way. We are saddened by this too!

all of this nonsense was caused by ALABAMA. The University of. For 88 years now this dingleberrry institution has been causing its rednecks to assault , murder and now kill trees. UA has created a "culture" of boasting, bragging and lying. the lies include the (hack!) 13 (HA!) national championship claims. also, "godlike" stature of bryant who only won because he kept 800 players on his bench so they couldnt play on other teams. this culture of privilege causes these trailer fools to commits these acts. it is alot like a religion. religious fanatics also believe they can be violent or just stupid for their beliefs. wake up alabama!

What kind of person would be making threats against 13-14 year olds such that they would have to be pulled out of school? I don't now, maybe their CLASSMATES? Nothing to see here, move along.

Death threats for killing a tree? Now who are the ignorant and stupid ones?

I am disgusted by this mans actions. I grew up in Auburn and have rolled those trees countless times. I am deeply saddened by the thought that I will more than likely not be able to share that tradition with my children and grandchildren. However - I would urge my fellow Auburn Family to not retailiate towards this mans family, the University of Alabama, or other Alabama fans. It is the action of one man, and that man is facing charges for it. Let the courts make this right and don't do anything foolish.

NOW who is showing their ignorance??? Our traditions are just as sacred as yours. To villify a dead man (Bear Bryant) is akin to beating a dead horse! Be angry and upset about what happened at Toomer's, you hsve a right. But you are instigating the very thing that every one wants to avoid. Are you implying that AU doesn't have fanatics and lunatics? Realistically, you know better. Before this is over, your fans will retaliate and more violence will erupt. I am sorry the trees were destroyed but to even compare that to killing PEOPLE is showing your ignorant backwoods raising. Yall are so envious of the 13 NC's we won***fair and square*** is prompting this behavior. At one time, you had a bit of class at AU...Shug Jordan. It has been all downhill since then and you can't stand that we have Saban. Sit back and wait for what your upstanding fans do in retaliation....then brag. Did you learn to spell and punctuate at AU? Tsk, tsk...din't learn much if so. ROLL TIDE NOW AND FOREVER!!!!!!!!!!!!

You might want to check the history books a little more closely before repeating this.
