Report: Pannunzio Hired At Bama For Off-Field Role

On Friday, reports out of Alabama listed former Miami Hurricanes’ special teams coordinator and tight ends coach Joe Pannunzio as a possible candidate for a role in the UA football offices.  Mike Vollmar left Bama’s job of associate athletics director for football in January and Pannunzio was believed to be a candidate to replace him.

This morning, FootballScoop.com reports that Saban has indeed hired Pannunzio for “an off-the-field role.”

From the looks of him, Pannunzio might serve as Saban’s “Clemenza,” hiding pistols behind toilets whenever necessary.

Leave the gun.  Take the cannoli.

Pannunzio was the assistant coach whom Shapiro refused to name when describing to Yahoo! Sports how an impermissible visit was set up at the booster’s $6 million Miami Beach mansion with top offensive line recruit Matt Patchan.

According to two sources, Pannunzio called Shapiro and arranged to have Patchan and his family – including the player’s mother, father and brother – brought to the booster’s home in the summer of 2007. Shapiro told Yahoo! Sports that this visit was attended by multiple Miami players, including Robert Marve, A.J. Trump, Derrick Morse and Jason Fox. The booster also said that two coaches were in attendance but would name only one: offensive line coach Jeff Stoutland.

According to the sources, Pannunzio was on hand while the booster gave Patchan and his family a tour of his home and made a recruiting pitch for the Hurricanes.

Three sources present at Patchan’s alleged visit to Shapiro’s home confirmed the presence of the recruit and his family, as well as Pannunzio, Stoutland and multiple Miami players.
