More Bad News For Auburn’s Oak Trees

Auburn professor Stephen Enloe became choked up during today’s press conference to discuss the poisoning of Toomer’s Corner’s famous oak trees.

Asked if the trees would survive, Enloe said, “It’s an emotional question.  I always want to hold out hope.  But based on the technical experts I consulted around the country, the concentration of Spike basically found in the soil would suggest there is a very low probability.”

Spike is the herbicide used — allegedly — by Harvey “Al from Dadeville” Updyke to attack the trees.

In addition, The Birmingham News reports that AU has no plan yet to replace the trees at Toomer’s Corner.  The poison used will likely remain in the soil for three to five years and obviously that could impact Auburn’s options.

Some AU officials are also concerned that the poison will impact other trees and shrubs in the area, not just the oaks.

I'm no real genius here, but why don't they just remove the soil, replace with fertile soil, and replant? Sounds pretty simple to me.

It is so sad that someone would stoop so low all because of a sports rivalry. One person's actions should not be construed as the opinion of the majority; but that one person should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law. The majestic oaks may be a symbol for the university, but they were first and foremost a tribute to the beauty of the natural world and God's creations. With any luck, perhaps some acorns from the oaks can be harvested to start saplings to plant on the campus, and even sold to raise funds to eventually clean up the site. Heartfelt condolences to the Auburn family.....

Every Bama person better hope those trees die. Cause if they survive, it will be living proof that God loves Auburn more!

One jerk takes away a tradition that is part of what Auburn is about... sick man. VERY sad.

This is sad. Auburn should do everything possible to replace the soil and the trees. I fear that this may result in some sort of retaliation on the part of a crazed Auburn fan.
