Meyer Chooses ESPN Over Florida

New ESPN analyst Urban Meyer is giving up his yet-to-be-determined role at Florida to focus solely on his new opportunity as a television analyst.  And for those who haven’t caught him today, he’s been pretty good.

“The University of Florida has been a big part of my personal and professional life for the past six years, and while I will no longer be able to continue a professional relationship with the University, I will continue to support the many friends I made during my time there,” Meyer said via statement today.

This move was always in the cards.  Will Muschamp and Meyer and the UF administration said all of the right things during the school’s coaching transition, but there was no way Meyer was going to stay at the school to do… to do… to do who knows what?

By severing his ties with UF on the eve of signing day, it meant that Meyer could act as an analyst for ESPN today and put Florida at risk of an NCAA violation.  If he had stayed on at UF, he’d have been a paid employee publicly talking about recruits and that would have been a no-no.

Meyer will be in the ESPN broadcast booth for one game per week during the regular season and he will also serve as a studio analyst for the network.  The studio analyst role shouldn’t be a problem.  The man is intelligent, well-spoken and he has shown enough charm behind closed to doors to win over a lot of recruits’ dads and moms.  He should be able to bring that to the studio desk.

As for the in-game analyst part, well, that might take him a while.  Anyone who heard Mike Leach do a game last year knows that it’s not always easy to go from the sideline to the announcer’s booth.
