Clowney Picks Carolina

In front of a huge media throng and ESPN’s cameras, Jadeveon Clowney announced that he would play his college football at South Carolina.

“I’m headed to the University of… South Carolina,” Clowney said.

ESPN delayed Clowney’s statement for a couple of extra minutes to squeeze in an additional commercial break.  The most laughable comment of the day came before Clowney’s choice as one school official said Clowney had not sought out all the media attention surrounding him.  Well, he sure could have avoided it by just releasing his pick last week in an email.  Since he elected to go the which-hat-will-I-pick route live on ESPN a full 10 days after signing day and a week after he admitted to actually making up his mind, we’ll keep right on thinking the kid was indeed seeking some spotlight.

Interestingly, Clowney said that he wanted to go to Alabama after his visit to Tuscaloosa, but his mother didn’t want him to go so far away from home.  (Wonder if any Bama fans will voice anger at a parent getting involved in her son’s decision… just days after Cyrus Kouandjio’s family helped flip him from Auburn to the Tide?)

This is obviously an enormous “get” for the Carolina program.  Steve Spurrier now has a building block on defense to go along with Marcus Lattimore on offense.  That’s if, of course, Clowney can get into USC and avoid a one-year stopover at Hargrave Military Academy.
