Calipari Not Impressed By Players-Only Meeting

Following Kentucky’s loss at Vanderbilt on Saturday — a loss that dropped UK to 1-5 on the road in the SEC — senior Josh Harrellson texted his teammates and set up a 30-minute team meeting.  No coaches were invited.  According to Jerry Tipton of The Lexington Herald-Leader, the discussion focused on “what could be done to prevent any more losses in close games.”

When John Calipari was asked about the players-only meeting, he didn’t sound too impressed.

“I didn’t know they had one.  They had a players’ meeting?”  When told that the meeting took place, Calipari said: “Oh, I hope it brings about change.”  He was being sarcastic.

“I could care less,” Calipari said.  He then compared team meetings to those metal bracelets folks wear to fend off aches, pains, arthritis, and the whooping cough.  Science shows the bracelets provide no medical  help, “but you seem to think it’s good for you, so do it.”

Kentucky hosts Mississippi State tonight.  Expect UK to play well.  They always do at Rupp Arena.  In fact, Kentucky hasn’t lost a home game in the two years since Calipari took over the program.

The home floor and partisan crowd will likely have more to do with the victory — should it come — than this week’s players-only meeting.
