Gators’ Muschamp Begins To Unveil Staff

It didn’t take long for Will Muschamp to make the Florida football program his own.  Saturday, Urban Meyer went out with an Outback Bowl win.  Sunday, Florida’s new coach began to unveil his new staff:

* The big name is offensive coordinator Charlie Weis.  The former Notre Dame head coach will be returning to the college game after a one-year stint in the NFL as the offensive coordinator with the Kansas City Chiefs.  Why leave a pro OC job for a college OC job?  Word is that Kansas City coach Todd Haley did not allow Weis to call the plays for the Chiefs.  Weis was considered an excellent play-caller in earlier NFL stops with the New York Jets and New England Patriots.  Haley and Weis weren’t believed to have had the best relationship, either.  Haley, however, said Weis was looking to get into the state of Florida where his son is planning to get into coaching.  In terms of a “name” for recruiting and an offensive guru, Muschamp has made a very nice hire in Weis.  He failed as Notre Dame’s head coach… not as an offensive coordinator.

* Former Florida player Aubrey Hill is returning to Gainesville to coach the Gators’ receivers.  Hill coached that position for that last three years on Randy Shannon’s Miami staff.

* Travaris Robinson will be coming to Florida as the secondary coach.  Robinson played at Auburn and spent the past season coaching Tommy Tuberville’s secondary at Texas Tech.  Robinson worked under Muschamp when he was the defensive coordinator under Tuberville at Auburn.

* Current running backs coach and recruiting coordinator Stan Drayton will return next year… along with tight ends coach Brian White and linebackers and special teams coach DJ Durkin.

There are just three slots left to fill on UF’s staff: defensive coordinator, defensive line coach and offensive line coach.

Alabama’s Kirby Smart — a former Georgia teammate of Muschamp — is still rumored to be a Gator target for the D-coordinator slot.  Smart and Saban have denied that Muschamp has talked to UA’s coach about joining his staff.

Another name in the mix is the Seattle Seahawks’ defensive line coach Dan Quinn.  Quinn and Muschamp coached together under Nick Saban with the Miami Dolphins.
