East Beats West In Basketball Battles

What we know:

* The SEC East is better than the SEC West.

* Any team in the SEC West needs to win its games against higher RPI-ranked SEC East teams

And what happened last night:

* The SEC West went 0-2 against the SEC East.

Arkansas built a lead in Columbia and held onto it for much of the game, but John Pelphrey’s club simply couldn’t close the door on the Gamecocks.  A nine-point comeback in the game’s final 10 minutes sent the contest to overtime where Sam Muldrow took over with five of his 20 points.  The 81-74 win pushes Darrin Horn’s squad to 3-1 in the East where they sit all by their lonesome in first place this morning.

In Nashville, a game of streaks ended with Vanderbilt knocking off Ole Miss 84-74.  The Rebels held a halftime lead, but that was erased by a 12-3 Vandy run to start the second half.  Ole Miss then went on a 14-3 run of its own.  But with the Rebels leading 66-65 with just under seven minutes to play the Commodores went on an 18-9 run to close out the game, nail down the victory, and even their SEC record at 2-2.  Ole Miss fell to 0-4 in league play, the Rebs’ worst start in SEC play since 2000.

The SEC West is just 3-6 against the East at this point with Auburn and Florida squaring off on The Plains tonight.  All three of the West’s wins have come on Alabama’s and Arkansas’ home courts:

Alabama 2-0 vs the East (wins over South Carolina, Kentucky)

Mississippi State 0-0 (begin three-game stretch versus East Saturday)

LSU 0-1 (loss at Kentucky)

Arkansas 1-1 (win over Tennessee, loss at South Carolina)

Ole Miss 0-3 (losses at Florida, to Georgia, at Vanderbilt)

Auburn 0-1 (loss at Kentucky)
