SEC Headlines – 12/13/10 Part One

1.  Longtime NFL personnel man Gil Brandt says Cam Newton will be picked early if he enters the draft as a junior.

2.  Some folks are upset with Florida for releasing word of Will Muschamp’s hiring during the Heisman Trophy presentation… thus upstaging Cam Newton.

3.  UF officials told Tony Barnhart that word was leaking out via social media and therefore they had no choice but to put out a statement during the ceremony.  Sure… because schools always want to make sure the media is fully up to speed and up to date.  Schools don’t allow rumors to float around during coaching searches.  Nope.  Never.  Florida couldn’t just leave the media in the dark for 30 extra minutes, could they?  (We made note of Florida’s timing on Saturday night.)

4.  Arkansas has some ties to Sugar Bowl opponent Ohio State.

5.  Razorback brass has shown a commitment to winning big by giving Bobby Petrino a fat, new extension.

6.  And it’s hard to doubt Petrino’s commitment to Arkansas, too.

7. LSU’s basketball team will face Coast Carolina tonight in Baton Rouge.

8.  Trent Johnson is worried about his team’s carelessness with the basketball.

9.  Graduate assistant Angelo Mirando — who I think was one of the heads of the Five Families — has taken over Mark Hudspeth’s duties with Mississippi State wideouts through the Gator Bowl.  (Hudspeth is the new head coach at Louisiana-Lafayette.)

10.  Dan Mullen is already working to replace his three starting senior linebackers.

11.  Mississippi State bounced back from a loss to East Tennessee State with a win over North Carolina A&T just 16 hours later.

12.  The Ole Miss basketball team will host Mississippi Valley State tonight.

13.  The Nick Saban coaching tree continues to branch out across the SEC.
