SEC Coaches’ Salaries Revealed

USA Today has done some digging and revealed the salary information for every head college football coach in the country.  Except for 10 private schools — including Vanderbilt.

You can find the full list here.  While bonuses and private money might cause a few of these numbers to be reported differently elsewhere, we believe that partnering with Marquette’s law school gives USA Today a leg up in truly studying each coach’s contract for 2010.

Here are the SEC’s coaches’ numbers:

If anyone beside Nick Saban would have returned a National Championship Team with 100% of his offense back, Heisman Trophy winner, and just reloading on defense< with the best defensive coach in College Football (NICK), they would be talking about how this was the worse coaching job in years !!!!!! You lose 3 games, spot Auburn 24 points and lose, come out 4th in the SEC West!!!!! Good Job little Nick!!!!

NOTHING IN ACADEMICS PAYS FOR ATHLETICS AT THESE SEC SCHOOLS, THEIR PROGRAMS STAND ALONE, AND ARE TOTALLY
SELF-SUFFICIENT. AND, ABOUT SABAN, YES HE IS A GREAT COACH, BUT HE IS AN A****LE. BIGTIME

O. K. guys and "Topekatiger" foo, I may be coming down a little hard on Miles and Crowton; but I've been around a while and know that history does repeat itself and luck eventually runs out. Just give me this one request. Let us see how Miles and Crowton come out against Texas A. & M. and then Oregon next year in Dallas. If they win either game, then I take back what I've said about Miles' coaching. But if they lose both games (and you know Miles will start Jefferson over Mettenberger no matter how good he may be) , will you admit that Miles and Crowton are the problem, and not the players?

Barry you mean 4th place SEC West finish behind Auburn, Arkansas, and LSU all of who had better records than the Saban coached Alabamer team.

I believe that Les Miles did a great job considering the quarterback situation. You can't say his team was not well prepared, just take another look at the forth quarter of the Alabama game. There is no doubt about it, Saban was just flat out coached . One other thing, even with the yardage Auburn ran up on us, the fighting tigers kept it close and had a chance to pull it out. All we need is a quarterback, not a new coach.

topekatiger

oh and thats for section 303 to...maybe you should be a section 8

Les Miles doesn't come across well in interviews. I believe he is a better coach than many give him credit for. However, Gary Crowton and the offensive line coach (Greg Studrawa) need to be replaced. The Tigers are going to have to come up with a dynamic offense because they will not be as lucky next year. Miles is the only coach I have ever seen who won a game after time had expired (and the play was dead). Lucky doesn't begin to describe the 2010 season.

topekatiger
topekatiger

@ Kneauxla, dude chill the "F" out! your not a real LSU fan......I bet you wouldn’t be happy if we went 13-0 next year and had the crystal ball on the mantle in baton rouge...as long as les is the coach that did it. Open you friggin eyes! Look at the stats Miles has posted at LSU...YES HE IS ODD at times but trust me...he has forgotten more about football in the last 60 seconds than you and I combined will ever learn in a life time. The # 1 reason LSU is not in AZ this year is because Miles had the integrity and fortitude to send perilloux packing. He knew he would struggle at QB. You Sir…have NO IDEA what your talking about!

In response to Section 303, you are correct that Miles is lucky, but there's a lot to be said for luck. I say go with it as long as his luck is holding, then fire him when it runs out.

Section 303
Section 303

LSU fan here also, but not a "Lesticles" Miles fan. A non-football junkie would think a 10-2 record would be fantanstic and all is well on the football front . Miles happens to be the luckiest coach in the world and he knows it. The problem is that he doesn't have a plan when his luck runs out. Miles, personally, does not have an Offensive-Minded cell in his head; so he has had to rely on Gary Crowton, his Offensive Coordinator, to direct the Tigers; which is his job. The problem, Crowton doesn't have but 2 imaginative offensive plays in his head. Miles tries to be cute in many of his remarks, which to most, are not responsive or puzzeling at best. If you look at the faces of some of the on-the-field interviewers, their expressions are like: "What did he say"? Until Crowton is replaced, the Tigers are going nowhere fast, despite the good fortune of signing Mettenberger and Rivers as QB's next year. You can have Cam Newton, but with no Offensive scheme or offensive line, you are just left with a clueless coach that makes $4,000,000/year and still picks his nose.

LSU fan back again.
Taking a look at the Auburn situation I think Gene Chizik might be the best bargain in college football coaching and he is vastly underpaid IMHO. The guy has done wonders in only his second year at the school. He looks to be a very good X's and O's guy to me. Being a LSU fan it doesn't make me happy to see Auburn make this step up but I have to be honest and give Chizik his just due. I think the stuff that came out about Cam Newton this year just boils down to a witch hunt. We know his dad solicited money for him to plat at Miss St. and there is zero evidence that he got paid to attend Auburn. He's a smart kid who has made a fw mistakes in his life which he has admitted and taken his punishment in stride and steps to correct them. He's paid his so called debt to society. Let the kid play football. He obviously can. He broke my heart when LSU played Auburn this year but no one can take away from him the fact that the kid is just a great football player. I'll be happy to see him leave Auburn and it will be interesting to see where he will play and how he will do in the NFL.

Kneauxla
Kneauxla

LSU fan here. Saban is overpaid IMHO but there is his history at LSU that is probably clouding my judgement. He is a very good coach and a great very persuasive recruiter. I'll give him his due but 5 million plus is a little much I think.

On the other hand, LSU's coach Less "The Hat" Miles is way overpaid. The guy is the classic deer in the headlights and doesn't have a clue. He and his staff are very good recruiters too bad they don't have a clue on how to develope that talent. His 10 win season (lots of luck involved there) isn't going to have him going anywhere this off-season (for the love of God would some stupid AD at some school please do us a favor and lure him away?) LSU won't be making a return to the NC anytime soon as long as Less is at the helm.

Saban has done an outstanding job coaching this great team and they will be back on top next year. Just watch. I think the Bear would be proud. Not all wins nor losses can be blamed completely on the coach. How many of you watched the games on TV this year and saw
many of the coaches "furious" because a player chose to execute a different play than the coach had called. Roll Tide! We will be back.

mike
mike

Not true..I actually work in the Business Operations department at a D-1 athletic department and there is not a lot of profit. This is supposed to be about academics and there is no reason to pay these coaches this amount. Do you think they would all leave to go coach in the NFL? Where would their opportunities be? We have just let it get out of hand. If you looked at this like a corporation, the shareholders are not getting a good return... About 10-12% of the revenue goes back into academics...I have facts Big guy!

mike
mike

1 million is plenty to coach college football. The excess should go back into academics.

Rowdireptile
Rowdireptile

Interesting that almost the lowest two paid coaches were in the SEC Championship game this year. Granted, Chizik's is due to the amount they pay for assistants like malzahn, roof, trooper taylor and the rest. Steve needs a HUGE! raise. To take a program that has never won ANYTHING EVER (really don't care about the '69 ACC Championship) and take them to SEC title game with wins over Tennessee, Florida, and Georgia all in the same year, and a win over #1 Alabama? Steve, if you're reading this, call me, I will get your cash. This is the easiest money grab short of AIG's bailout.

@NUKE Nuke: Tennessee, Alabama and Florda schools among others all take state money. They are not self sufficient. (Georgia schools are prohibitied by state law from spending state money on any intercollegiate athletic activities including out of state tuition and facilities. )

Well well…..old school and cotton…seems we may have to break out the history lesson…..seems there are a few schools with more championships than the tide they only have “17” LOL…..any way, nice to go back and forth on here……I am really looking Forward to next season….I really believe that LSU will follow the same path as auburn….bring in instant QB power from JuCo (the only missing ingredient) plus one of the nation’s top defense…..they should be ranked in the top three right from the start.

Frank
Frank

Oh I guess your guaranteeing there wont be any injuries again next year. Give me a break every team has injuries thats just a lame excuse. Saban lost at least 3 games every year except 1 at LSU, but that was only because of"the injuries to key players" otherwise LSU would have been in the BCS championship game every year. Right King Cotton?

Old School Tiger
Old School Tiger

No. Because I don't acknowledge there is a problem. That's your contention. I will admit that we shouldn't have been caught without a QB, but I would rather deal with that predicament than having to explain away 10 player arrests a year as they do in Athens and Gainesville. Keep in mind also that our 10-2 record was achieved with tons of freshmen, particularly in the defensive backfield. I suppose Chavis gets all the credit for that, huh?

Well Section 303 explain this to me, since people like you can no longer use the excuse that Miles is doing it with Saban's players you now want to say he is doing it with luck, but if you are a good coach with very talented players, such as Saban at Alabama why couldn't he do any better than 5-3 in the same conference that Miles coaches in? I personally witnesed that LSU vs Alabama game and I agree with most of the national college football media, who I would not call non-football junkies, when they said Miles out coached Saban. Curious to hear your resopnse to that.

We won the National Championship with Miles and Crowton, Kind of blows your opinion....Luck to sign Mettenberger???? was it a lottery or something I don't know about? Seems like you would have a clearer view from section 303.

1 game can be luck. 1 season makes you one of the luckiest men a live. 6 years makes you so much BETTER than the others that it just appears lucky to the small minded people who can't accept the fact that the man they pay 4 million $ to know more about football than they do actually does.

kneauxla. acting like you are an LSU fan is not very smart! it's easy to see through you! a real fan would not bash one of the top 3 coachs in the country if he coaches your team!! do you know who the only coach in the sec is who has a winning recored over him is? It sure not your darling saban or myres or chizik. If you are a real LSU fan, then you are also a fool, talking about a coach like miles with his record like you do.

twilliam

Only two teams make it to the NC game each year numbnuts. LSU made it to and won the NC under Miles. Was "in the hunt" this year until the last regular weekend! Longer than Nick, Urban, Spurrier, Petrino, Kiffin, Brown, any Stoopes, the vest, criminal from UNC, any how even you should get the point. Is next year soon enough for you, because LSU is in better shape than most programs in the country to make a "damn strong" run at the NC.

Old School Tiger

Please do us real LSU fans a favor and transfer your loyalties. Miles is the winningest 6 year coach in LSU history. He was the fastest to 10 wins, 20 wins, 30, 40, 50 and 60. He recruits extremely well, especially within the state. The guy gets us 10 wins in a season when many were expecting 8 or 9. I'd love to know just who you'd replace him with.

That's just not good business. Most of the programs that pay coaches lots of money make lots of profit, well in excess of 3 million, and much of that does go back to academics. Salaries for top college football coaches are a profitable investment. It's the second and third tier schools that end up sacrificing money from the general pot to pay for athletic programs.

DO you forget the Cheating at FLORIDA by CAM, being thrown out of school and the money to go to MISS ST, then not being able to pass at FLORIDA, has no trouble at AUBURN, and MR. SLIVE sweaping it all under HIS RUG??? Do all the other teams have to cheat to keep up with those that do, and IS IT EASIER TO PASS SUBJECTS AT AUBURN THAN AT FLORIDA??? I WOULD LIKE ALL THIS SOLVED!!! I BELIEVE THAT THERE IS CHEATING GOING ON AT auburn, hope I am wrong, but do not think so, what say MR SLIVE??? Lets get this all cleared up, as they did at USC! maranatha!!! john

Section 303
Section 303

What I don't understand is why you accept 10-2, when with some imagination in the offense we had a real chance to go 12-0. How can you possible justify being 112 out of 120 Div I schools in offensive performance? It's like making a 90 on a test without studying. You can't just blame the QB play, because Jefferson could start for 8 of the 12 SEC teams. Those same offensive coordinators would give their eye teeth for Randal, Tolliver, Sheppard, and others as a receiving corps. We did not exploit the talent we had on offense, and that is what I am dissappointed with. That is a coaching problem, not a player problem.....

Section 303
Section 303

For the umpteenth time, what I am saying is Miles coached his offense like a student making a 90 on a test without studying. We all said that he out coached Saban in the Alabama game. You saw a reverse, bubble screens, fake punts, etc; which showed some imagination, and which Saban hadn't prepared for. Then we play Ole Miss and Arkansas, and never saw that level of play calling or imagination again. What is Crowton sayving it for? A. & M. and maybe move up to #10? Frank, explain to me why you wouldn't want to exploit all of your offensive weapons, and possibly win more games, and more games than by less than a touchdown? 10-2 is great. Saban, Meyer, Spurrier would be a lot happier with that record; but I think they could have done more with our players offensively, than Miles. Will it be any different next year?

Frank
Frank

Hey Kneauxla head it is you who doesn't have a clue. Coaching in the undisputed toughest conference in the nation, Miles record is 61-17 over all and 32-15 in conference games and he is 2-2 against Saban coached teams, 3-3 against Urban Myer coached teams and 2-0 agains Spurrier coached teams. He is also 3-2 against Bob Stoops and 1-0 against Jim Tressel. If he doesn't have a clue please tell me how come these so called great coaches don't have a better record against him. And before you uses that weak ass excues that he did most of that with Saban's talent, I believe this years game against Alabama refutes that as Miles took a team with all players recruited by him and beat a very talented team recruited mostly by Saban and soundly beat him. It would appear to me that maybe it is Saban that can't develop talent. He won with Dinardo recruited players at LSU before he went 8-4 in his last year at LSU with all talent recruited by him and he has won with talent recruited by Shula at Alabama yet went 8-3 this year with talent mostly recruited by him.

Geaux Tigers
Geaux Tigers

Exactly Old School. The ugliest, "luckiest", most unhappy 10 wins beats the crap out of the prettiest, happiest 9 wins every time.

Frank
Frank

303 you give even more reason you should be singing Les' praises. Even with the 112th rankde offense he went 10-2 with a schedule that included 5 top 25 teams and the only two teams he lost to are top 10 teams including the number 1 team in the nation. Do you think Saban could have gone 10-2 with the 112th ranked offense in the nation? Oh yea he went 9-3 with a much better offense. Damn Miles must be a good coach. Thanks 303 for pointing that out. Saban must have had really bad luck this year, right? LOL
