Driskel Needs To Talk To Florida Coaches

The news of Urban Meyer resigning at Florida will certainly have an impact on recruiting.

The Gators currently have 17 commitments for the 2011 class. The highest profile of the class is quarterback Jeff Driskel from Hagerty High School in Oviedo, Fla.

Driskel told he hasn’t spoken to coaches at Florida since hearing the news and still needs to do so.

“I’m trying to sort it all out,” said Driskel, who has been committed to Florida since April.

Coaches from opposing schools will try to take advantage of Meyer’s resignation immediately. One school to watch will be Florida State, which has enjoyed success in recruiting since Jimbo Fisher became the Seminoles’ full-time head coach last winter.

SEC schools will be in the mix for Florida’s commitments and targets, too.

Defensive end Anthony Chickillo, who’s committed to Miami, had planned to visit Florida this weekend. He no longer plans to visit now that Meyer is leaving Florida, according to Of course, Chickillo is also waiting to see who Miami will hire to become its next head coach.

Cornerback Nick Waisome, who’s committed to Florida, just learned of Meyer’s resignation this afternoon. Waisome declined to comment on the news when reached by the Gainesville Sun.

Wide receiver Ja’Juan Story from Brooksville, Fla., will be one prospect to watch. Story has already been wavering in his commitment to Florida. Meyer’s resignation shouldn’t help the Gators’ attempt to hold on to him.

Georgia coaches visited Story on Wednesday at Nature Coast High School. Other schools will likely try to get in the mix with Story now that it’s open season on Florida prospects.

Defensive end Ray Drew, one of the nation’s top prospects out of Thomasville, Ga., told the Atlanta Journal Constitution that Meyer’s resignation will hurt the Gators in his recruitment.

“I’m not going to say it X’s them out but that’s a problem,” Drew said. “A big problem.”

Another story to follow could be the reaction of freshmen on campus at Florida. Remember, Gators freshmen told a prospect in October that they wish they hadn’t chosen Florida.

We’ll keep you posted here on with updates on the impact in recruiting with Meyer’s resignation from Florida.
