Slophouse Pick (8-1)
Coaches don’t like to label these as “warm-up” games, but there is no doubt UTEP doesn’t present the same challenges of an Alabama or Auburn. The Miners are 6-4 this season with a 3-4 record in Conference-USA while the Razorbacks have won seven games overall, including a convincing drubbing of SEC East leader South Carolina last week on the road. If the Razorbacks, who are still in the running for a BCS berth, can play anywhere near the caliber of the last few weeks, they should win this game easily.
That’s not to say the Miners are a pushover. UTEP does have veteran skill players and that will be something to watch. Senior quarterback Trevor Vittatoe will likely surpass 12,000 career passing yards on Saturday and senior receiver Kris Adams has more than 2,300 receiving yards and 26 touchdowns in his career. With Ramon Broadway out for the rest of the season, replacement Greg Gatson could get a good trial-by-fire with ranked opponents Mississippi State and LSU upcoming. UTEP’s offensive line has also been good this year, allowing just 11 sacks through 10 games.
The key will likely be a quick start. Arkansas has shown the ability to start strong this season, racking up at least 20 first half points against Tennessee Tech, Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Vanderbilt and South Carolina. Another quick start against UTEP should make for smooth sailing if the defense holds up its end of the bargain. After giving up 130 yards and two touchdowns in the first two drives against Vandy, the Razorbacks have been stout on defense, allowing just one touchdown in the last seven quarters.
