Newton’s Traffic Records Now Making News, Too

If you check the messageboards across the SEC today, you’re likely to spot a link to the Alachua County Clerk of the Court records website.  Alachua County is home to the Florida Gators, in case you’re wondering.

Last December, The Orlando Sentinel reported that Florida’s football players had logged a grand total of 251 traffic citations between 2006 and 2009.  The Alachua County site logged a lot of pageviews in the days and weeks following the report.

Traffic records are once again in the news now as part of the ongoing Cam Newton smear campaign.  And the news isn’t good for Auburn’s quarterback.

Now personally, I don’t worry too much when someone’s been hit with a speeding ticket.  I’ve been pulled over on occasion myself and I’m far from a felon.

But I don’t have 13 court cases to my name, either.

If you search Newton’s name in the Alachua County database, the following cases pop up:

4/25/2007 — “TAG-NONE-OBSCURED-DEFACED IMPROPER DISPLAY”

5/7/2007 — “$125 – FAIL TO STOP AT STEADY RED SIGNAL”

6/5/2007 — “UNLAWFUL SPEED – NO SPEEDS INDICATED”

6/13/2007 — “TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVIS – FAIL TO OBEY”

7/9/2007 — “PASSING IN A NO PASSING ZONE”

7/19/2007 — “DL NOT CARRIED – EXHIBIT ON DEMAND”

8/6/2007 – “FAIL TO OBEY TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICE – RAN RED LIGHT”

12/10/2007 — “TRAFFIC CONTROL DEVICE – FAIL TO OBEY”

7/24/2008 — “UNLAWFUL SPEED – NO SPEEDS INDICATED”

7/28/2008 — “DL NOT CARRIED – EXHIBIT ON DEMAND”

8/27/2008 — “VIOLATION MUNICIPAL SPEED – POSTED – (REQUIRES SPEEDS)

11/7/2008 — “UNKNOWINGLY OPERATING VEHICLE WHILE DL SUSPENDED – CANCELED – REVOKED”

11/21/2008 — This document dealt with Newton’s possession of a stolen laptop

First, either Newton never took Driver’s Ed in high school or he doesn’t take the rules of the road seriously.

Second, if Newton were still at Florida, it’s doubtful that Florida fans would be directing people to the Alachua Country website.  (They must not think that rival fans will follow up by checking on the names of other former and current Gators.)

Third, once again this is great fodder for messageboards and it will certainly help to further erode Newton’s Heisman support, but it has nothing to do with his college eligibility.  So while this kind of stuff is bouncing all over the internet, we still must wait to find what the NCAA uncovers in its investigation of Newton’s recruitment.  The rest of this stuff has nothing do with Auburn.

Unless it drives Newton to the pros, of course.

Urban Meyer probably had the police tail and harass him in case he ever transferred.
