Kanter dresses for practice, meaning?

Freshman Enes Kanter was seen wearing practice gear and headed for Kentucky’s practice court on Thursday. What that meant with regard to Kanter’s eligibility status remained unknown.

UK Coach John Calipari played coy when asked about Kanter practicing.

“I don’t know,” he told reporters. “Let me go in there (to practice) and find out.”

The NCAA Eligibility Center has been reviewing questions about Kanter’s amateur status. He played three seasons for a professional team in his native Turkey.

During such reviews, players can practice for 45 days. Kanter’s time limit expired in mid-September. UK won an appeal for an extension until the end of September. But Kanter has not practiced since that time.

When asked about Kanter playing for UK at some point this season, Calipari said, “Uh, there is a chance, but he won’t be playing Friday.”

UK opens the season Friday against East Tennessee State.

Under NCAA rules, a player who has been declared ineligible can practice while his or her school appeals the ruling. If that circumstance applies to Kanter, Calipari was not saying as UK began practice Thursday.
