Ex-Auburn Coach Dye Criticizes UF’s Meyer

Speaking to the Macon Touchdown Club last night, former Auburn coach Pat Dye had some criticisms for current Florida coach Urban Meyer while discussing the ongoing Cam Newton mess.

“I am disappointed that Urban Meyer didn’t step up and say something on that kid’s behalf, because (Newton) left Atlanta to go to Florida and fulfill his dream as a college football player,” Dye said.  “He made some bad choices and bad decisions, which young people will do.”

According to Dye, Meyer could “have been a hero” if he had praised what Newton had accomplished at Auburn and/or clarified the player’s departure from Gainesville.  Instead, Dye said, Meyer has done the opposite.

A few weeks ago — after a story from an Auburn website accused Meyer of leaking Newton’s academic record — the coach said, “For anyone to think that I or anyone on our staff may have leaked information about private student records to the media doesn’t know us very well.  It’s a ridiculous claim and simply not true.”

He also told The Gainesville Sun that he and Newton “had a great relationship right up until the time he left.  Cam and I and his family always had a great relationship.  I don’t know where this is all coming from.  But it didn’t come from me.  I know nothing about nothing.”

It doesn’t sound like Dye necessarily agrees.

And there for a second I thought we might actually make it through a day without a Cam Newton story.
