Majors, Fulmer Say Nice Things About One Another. Temperature Drops In Hell.

Is there a thaw on Rocky Top?

The picture at left (click this story’s headline for a closer look) was taken by sports commentator and former Tennessee defensive back Charles Davis.  It’s a grainy cell phone photo snapped shortly before the funeral of former Vol offensive lineman Harry Galbreath began on Tuesday.

In the front pew, separated only by a water bottle, a few papers, and nearly 20 years of pent up anger, sit former UT football coaches Johnny Majors and Phillip Fulmer.

Now, these two men have been in the same room a few times since Majors was forced out at Tennessee and Fulmer was welcomed in 1992.  But according to folks at the memorial service for Galbreath, the two men did more than just sit in the same room together this time.  Reportedly, they went so far as to reference one another as they eulogized their former star.

And when I say referenced each other, I don’t mean anything that would have to be bleeped by network television censors.

Majors reportedly credited Fulmer for finding the unheralded Galbreath and for teaching him well as his position coach.  Fulmer followed by crediting Majors with having the foresight to sign Galbreath and said that it was in this way that Majors rebuilt the Tennessee program.

According to one former Vol in attendance, many former players at the funeral were downright shocked by the apparent thaw.  There was even a bit of cordial interaction between the two during the service.

For those hoping for an out-and-out burying of the hatchet (outside of someone’s skull, of course), it’s unlikely that the two men will ever be buddy-buddy with one another.

Instead, their detente at Galbreath’s funeral was probably just two men putting aside their own differences so they could properly honor one of their favorite players.  I wouldn’t expect the Majors and Fulmers to start barbecuing together anytime soon.

Still, the site of Majors and Fulmer (who Majors once called “Judas Brutus”) being — dare I say? — warm to one another was enough to stun members of the Tennessee family who witnessed the event.
