Buffalo To Face UT, Hamilton To Face Scrutiny

Tennessee athletic director Mike Hamilton is indeed going to buy out his school’s two-game series with North Carolina and it looks like Buffalo will take the Tar Heels’ place.

“It’s been verbal communication to this point and in these situations there still has to be formality to any contract, and so we’ve let Carolina know that we’re going to go a different direction since they were not able to move the game and the series to a later date in the decade,” Hamilton told The Knoxville News Sentinel.  “Personally, it’s kind of a downer for me because I was looking forward to playing Carolina as a North Carolina native, but without the ability to move it to later in the decade, we felt like we needed to break that six-game stretch up and put a non-BCS team in there.  We’ll buy out of the series and do that and move ahead.”

Buffalo of the MAC conference is believed to be heading to Knoxville in 2011 to fill that Carolina’s old slot.  Orginially, UT was scheduled to travel to Chapel Hill.

None of this is likely to help Hamilton on the public relations front.  He is having to buy out a contract in order to rearrange a schedule… that he put in place.

Of course, no one knew when these deals were signed that Tennessee’s program would be in such a state of disarray moving into 2011, but that hardly lessens the hit on UT’s athletic director.  There are still plenty of Phillip Fulmer supporters who believe Hamilton helped lead the Vols into their current state by axing a man that they believe could have fixed the program.  Instead, Hamilton went in another direction (Lane Kiffin) and, as Robert Frost once said, that has made all the difference.
