SEC Headlines – 6/3/10

1.  Nick Saban wants to be able to go out and evaluate prospects in the spring, but he says his fellow coaches are “split down the middle” on the so-called Saban Rule.

2.  Alabama AD Mal Moore says the SEC is still looking for ways to ease the Tide’s football schedule this fall.

3.  Auburn AD Jay Jacobs said of Alabama’s plight, “It’s unfair.  If I got my schedule ans aw all those open dates for my opponents, I’d be unhappy, too.”

4.  Gene Chizik likes having an open date before the Iron Bowl… especially if Alabama doesn’t have one.

5.  No surprise here: Chizik believes recruiting is the key to future Auburn success.

6.  Jacobs says “The Auburn people have come together, and we’re as unified now as we’ve ever been.”

7.  Bobby Petrino says quarterback Ryan Mallett will resume running and throwing again this week.

8.  Les Miles likes the idea of an early signing period, but he doesn’t want it to hurt “the team you’re coaching on your campus.”

9.  MSU’s Rick Stansbury didn’t answer a question about the future of Dee Bost.  State’s point guard initially declared himself for the NBA draft, but it’s now believed that he will ask the NCAA to reinstate him.

10.  A Florida beatwriter sounds pretty down on Auburn quarterback Cameron Newton. 

11.  CBS analyst Gary Danielson believes Florida needs to tweak its post-Tim Tebow spread offense.  “They cannot have John Brantley getting hit 12, 15 times per game.”

12.  This writer says the SEC East is still a Gators-first zone.

13.  Entering his 15th season in Gainesville, Billy Donovan still has a passion for the game.

14.  Georgia has announced the kickoff times for its games with Sotuh Carolina, Arkansas, Colorado and Florida.

15.  When UGA travels to Boulder, the Buffaloes will be honoring the 20th anniversary of their 1990 AP national championship team.

16.  Dennis Felton’s fingerprints on the Georgia basketball program are being rubbed away.

17.  Felton’s replacement, Mark Fox, says “There’s a lot of things for this program to accomplish.”

18.  Alabama high school officials continue to pry deeper into the Eric Bledsoe situation.

19.  This writer says UK’s John Calipari isn’t sleazy, he’s just “one slippery dude.”

20.  This ESPN scribe says Kentucky “has to be really, really, really careful when it clears its athletes.”

21.  This year’s UK-Louisville football game will air on ABC.

22.  Carolina football fans will need some sunscreen early in the season.

23.  Folks in Tennessee are mourning the loss of one of the most respected men in college sports — former sports information director Haywood Harris.

24.  Sportswriters from across the country are mourning the death of the 80-year-old Harris as well.  (In my dealings with Harris over the past 20 years, I found him to be as warm, wise and welcoming as anyone I’ve dealt with in either the sports or media fields.  He will be missed.)

25.  Vanderbilt was good to go with an ESPN proposal to move its season-opener with Northwestern to a Sunday in order to get some national exposure for both schools… but the Wildcats wouldn’t do it.

26.  It seems more coaches are interested in creating an early signing period this year… but it’s still not likely to happen.

27.  Mike Slive said secondary NCAA violations are still a chief concern of his office.

28.  This writer says the SEC is too busy counting its cash to seriously consider expanding.

29.  The SEC wants to land six teams in the NCAA tournament per year… but the league has earned just 7 bids in the past two years combined.

UPDATE — 30.  Even Slive understands that an anti-cowbell rule is hard to enforce.
