SEC Headlines – 6/2/10

1.  Nick Saban says he will never move again.  “I am where I am.  If they get a football team at Lake Burton, I might go there.  Otherwise, I am where I am.”

2.  Saban believes it’s harder to stay focused when you’re trying to repeat as champions.

3.  One thing Saban is not focused on is Alabama gubernatorial candidate Tim James’ joking comments about him.

4.  Tailback Mark Ingram has received yet another honor.

5.  The SEC will discuss future football schedule changes this week.  Sources say Alabama wants the league to move its annual game with Ole Miss out of October and into September in future years.

6.  Alabama quarterback signee Blake Sims still has some work to do academically.

7.  Here’s a preview piece on Auburn’s football matchup with Louisiana-Monroe.  (Can you tell it’s summer?)

8.  Is Ryan Mallett irreplaceable at Arkansas?

9.  Count LSU’s Les Miles as being among the anti-cowbell crowd.  “I don’t know exactly what will come from these meetings, but it could be a serious issue with noisemakers.  Me personally, I don’t want to see them.  I want to make sure those stay on the sideline.”  (I can’t read the word “noisemaker” without thinking of John Prine’s “Dear Abby,” but that’s just me.)

10.  Les Miles said yesterday that if other conferences “reshuffled wildly, there might be a reason to expand.  I think it would have to be a wild reshuffling.”

11.  MSU athletic director Scott Stricklin believes he was able to convey to his fellow ADs just how hard it is to police the league’s anti-noisemaker policy.

12.  It sounds like Dan Mullen has more important things on his mind than cowbells.

13.  This year’s SEC tournament final between State and Kentucky was the highest rated pre-NCAA tourney game on any network last season.

14.  Ole Miss AD Pete Boone says the league is “real comfortable with where we are.”

15.  Urban Meyer hasn’t experienced any chest pains since January…

16.  But this writer believes the real test for Meyer will come when the Gators face Alabama on October 2nd.

17.  Everyone was glad to learn that Meyer’s chest pains weren’t caused by a bad ticker…

18.  But this writer doesn’t seem to be buying the “esophageal spasms” explanation.

19.  Here’s a Q&A with UF defensive end signee Dominique Easley.

20.  Georgia won’t have a new UGA mascot in place by the start of the football season.  Instead, “Russ” will be filling in.

21.  Offensive tackle Clint Boling should be back from ankle surgery “in a matter of weeks.”

22.  Defensive end signee Jalen Fields didn’t qualify academically and will play elsewhere this fall.

23.  Georgia AD Damon Evans and president Michael Adams said today that Mark Richt is NOT on the hot seat.

24.  Asked if the heat of Richt’s seat might change with another 8-5 season, Adams said, “You know me well enough.  I don’t deal in hypothesis or hypotheticals.”

25.  This fan/writer says he’s hearing more and more UGA fans saying “they expect the Dogs to achieve 10 wins this season, at the very least.”

26.  Steve Spurrier had an interesting take on how longevity is the enemy of coaches.  “Everybody’s expected to win, and if you’re not winning, what the fans want to see is change.  Even if change doesn’t bring wins, it brings the hope of something different happening.  That’s the nature of sports.”  And that’s a brilliant way of putting it.

27.  On the football front, Carolina might play three freshmen offensive linemen this year.  (Also, Spurrier said “our crowds were a little down this year” when it came to booster functions.)

28.  Spurrier joked yesterday with Tennessee’s Derek Dooley that since he went so long with his media session, “We’ll have to put you on the clock.”

29.  A former chairman of the NCAA’s Committee on Infractions says it’s “not uncommon” for the NCAA to re-examine a player’s academic eligibility after initially clearing him.

30.  This writer says the Eric Bledsoe situation is getting more national press because it ties to a) Kentucky and b) John Calipari.  (In other news, the Earth is round.)

31.  New Calipari assistant Kenny Payne will be missed in Oregon.

32.  Dooley is saying all the right things about how he wants his Tennessee team to compete this fall.

33.  Dooley’s old boss Nick Saban had good things to say about him.

34.  The Vols have signed a junior college center to come in and help this fall.

35.  This writer says only Texas would make expansion worthwhile for the SEC.

36.  Former 6-11 UTEP forward Arnett Moultrie will take visits before deciding whether to transfer to Arkansas, Kentucky, Mississippi State, Tennessee, Memphis or Texas.  (UTEP has reversed field and decided to release Moultrie to MSU if that’s where he wants to go.)
