Sunday News and Notes: Zach Mettenberger Dismissed by UGA and Other News

The big news today is that UGA has dismissed redshirt freshman QB Zach Mettenberger. Mettenberger was already going to have to serve a one-game suspension as punishment for an alcohol-related arrest that occurred earlier this spring. Mark Richt has attributed his dismissal to a “violation of team rules,” and the issue is apparently related to his prior arrest.

Losing Mettenberger isn’t good for the Dawgs. After a strong spring, he was projected to vie with Aaron Murray and Logan Grey for the starting position. While most bets were on Murray, Mettenberger did have a shot, and even if Murray was always going to be the guy, the Dawgs still lose on depth. That’s never a good thing when you have as much uncertainty at the QB position as UGA will have coming into the fall.

You do have to give Richt credit for being standing by his guns on disciplinary issues, as he usually does. Mettenberger wouldn’t even have been suspended for this if it had happened in Gainesville. OK, maybe that’s being a little harsh. I’m sure Urb would have suspended him for the first quarter of the Gators’ game against Miami of Ohio

A couple of other tidbits:

Gamecocks win series but fail to sweep Ole Miss. The Gamecocks lost a close Sunday game 5-4. On the bright side of things, we do retain a one game lead over Florida for first place in the East, as the Gators lost to Kentucky today.
