Richt: Gray Still Mulling Options

His old high school coach doesn’t think he’ll transfer, but his college coach says Georgia quarterback candidate Logan Gray is still “looking over his options.”

Mark Richt also told a group of Bulldog fans that Gray still has a chance to win the starting job that currently belongs to Aaron Murray.  Richt has said again and again that being the leader in the QB battle in April doesn’t guarantee that Murray will be the starter in September.

“Like I’ve said numerous times, Aaron has not won the job.”

UGA’s coach desperately needs Gray to stick around.  If he leaves, only Murray and incoming freshman Huston Mason will be scholarship signal-callers.

There has been speculation that Gray might want to get on the field in some fashion… even if it’s not at quarterback.  As Murray’s backup, it would be difficult for Richt to use him in other capacities and thus risk losing him to injury.

“We’ll do whatever we need to do,” said Richt.  “My comment on Logan is we want him in the best position to help Georgia win, in a position where hopefully he can enjoy his college experience.  Wherever that is, I don’t know.”

Best case scenario for the Dawgs: Murray excels in fall camp; Mason quickly picks things up and flashes some real talent; Gray can then be used as a receiver or dual-threat quarterback while still serving as UGA’s emergency third-string quarterback.
