SEC East Headlines – 3/25/10

1.  Florida quarterback John Brantley missed practice with a fever yesterday.

2.  The guy Brantley’s replacing will probably make the cover of EA Sports’ NCAA Football ’11.

3.  Tim Tebow asked players to bow their heads and pray before taking the Wonderlic test at the NFL combine.  He wasn’t exactly met with niceties.  (Judging by his so-so score, the prayer didn’t help much.)

4.  New defensive coordinator Teryl Austin is settling in at Florida.

5.  Urban Meyer hasn’t been as involved in practice this spring.  Which apparently gives him more time to stick his finger in a reporter’s face.

6.  This writer believes Meyer’s rant to a reporter were simply part of a brilliant strategy to pull his team together.  He also sees nothing “out of line” with threatening the writer.

7.  With Ray Shipman transferring, UF’s basketball team is once again looking for depth in the backcourt.

8.  Shipman is the fifth Gator to transfer away in the last two years.

9.  Warren Belin — in charge of Georgia’s kick coverage — won’t give away his plans for improving the worst kick coverage unit in the SEC.

10.  New defensive coordinator Todd Grantham is starting to see some improvement from his squad.

11.  The Dawgs’ defensive line is starting to take shape.

12.  There is competition all over the place this spring in Athens.

13.  Tennessee linebacker Nick Reveiz is on track with his knee rehab.

14.  Derek Dooley’s use of tight ends was inspired by Nick Saban.

15.  Bruce Pearl’s team didn’t fold after a January arrest and the dismissal of the team’s top star.

16.  Tennessee uses a lot more of its bench than Ohio State does.

17.  A few folks believe the Vols will get past the Buckeyes tomorrow night.

18.  Backup quarterback Aramis Hillary will transfer from South Carolina in hopes of finding more playing time…

19.  Which is not a surprise.  His departure also has nothing to do with his recent alcohol-related arrest.

20.  Fullback Matt Coffee is ready to do what it takes to get on the field.

21.  South Carolina’s “character coach” is no longer part of USC’s basketball program and the team is “no longer using the services of the FCA.”

22.  This writer believes there’s solid substance behind John Calipari’s easygoing style.

23.  UK will face the unexpected tonight against Cornell…

24.  But you can throw the stereotypes out the window — the Big Red can play.

25.  In fact, Cornell might just hold a matchup edge here or there.

26.  Cornell is one of the best shooting teams in the country.  Kentucky is the fourth best in the nation at defensive field goal percentage.

27.  Despite all the talk, the smart money is still on the Cats.

28.  UK could lose Eric Bledsoe and Daniel Orton to the NBA.  (Along with John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins and Patrick Patterson.)

29.  Calipari is now telling his team that everyone’s agin’ ‘em.
