Austin’s Connection To UF Is Addazio

Now that it looks like Teryl Austin is thisclose to landing the co-defensive coordinator job at Florida, you might be wondering how he found himself on the Gators’ radar.

Simple.  He coached with Steve Addazio at Syracuse in the late ’90s.

Two questions remain…

1.  Will Austin be the “defensive coordinator” as everyone is reporting or will he co-coordinate along with the recently promoted Chuck Heater?

As we mentioned in our discussion of Charlie Harbison’s candidacy yesterday, Heater was last month named “Assistant Defensive Coordinator” to go along with his duties as safeties coach.

Dan McCarney will handle the defensive line.  DJ Durkin was hired to coach Florida’s linebackers and special teams.

A quick scan of Austin’s bio shows that he has coached defensive backs in every full-time gig he’s held: Wake Forest, Syracuse, Michigan, Seattle Seahawks and Arizona Cardinals.

So, will he take over the UF cornerbacks and be THE defensive coordinator… or will he be called a co-coordinator?

2.  Is Austin ready to be the Gators’ coordinator (or co-coordinator)?

A second quick scan of Austin’s bio shows that he has never been a D-coordinator at any stop along his coaching route.  Every coordinator gets a chance somewhere, but is Florida really the place to break in?

Dan Mullen did it successfully.  Perhaps Austin can, too.  But just in case, maybe the CO in co-coordinator should be emphasized.
