Tennessee Coaching Search Update

At his press conference today, Mike Hamilton said that he will move swiftly to land a new head coach at Tennessee.

According to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Texas defensive coordinator Will Muschamp probably won’t wind up at Tennessee.  Sources close to UT are already saying that Muschamp has told the Volunteers that he’s not interested.

Matt Hayes of The Sporting News is reporting that Hamilton was turned down by former Tampa Bay head coach Jon Gruden last night.  Hayes also lists the following candidates for the job: Muschamp, David Cutcliffe, Kevin Sumlin and… Phillip Fulmer.

If Fulmer returns, it will mean that Hamilton has been ousted.  Those two will not work together again.

As for reports that Fulmer has been contacted about Hamilton’s job, I have heard from conflicting sources.  One says that the deal is done.  The other — which I put more trust in — says that he believes Hamilton will be not lose his job, but he will lose power.

Suffice to say, the Tennessee athletic department is in an absolute free fall right now.

The names that have been mentioned in connection with the UT search:

Jon Gruden, ex-NFL coach
Will Muschamp, Texas defensive coordinator
Tony Dungy, ex-NFL coach
Gary Patterson, TCU
Chris Petersen, Boise State
Houston Nutt, Ole Miss
Bobby Petrino, Arkansas
Kevin Sumlin, Houston
David Cutcliffe, Duke
Troy Calhoun, Air Force
Kirby Smart, Alabama defensive coordinator
