SEC East Headlines – 1/8/10

1.  Florida is the only school in the country to finish in the top three in the AP Poll in three of the last four seasons.  (Kind of a bizarre stat.)

2.  This writer believes Alabama is the team to beat in the SEC next year, not Florida… which seems kind of obvious at this point.

3.  Several Florida juniors are still trying to decide whether or not to go pro.

4.  Which five NFL teams are most likely to draft Tim Tebow?  According to one writer — Seattle, Washington, New England, Jacksonville and Buffalo.

5.  Billy Donovan says he understands what Urban Meyer is going through.

6.  Georgia tight end Orson Charles has been named a freshman All-American.

7.  The Bulldogs were unranked in the final football polls for the first time since 1996.

8.  In his first act as Kentucky’s new football coach, Joker Phillips reportedly whacked offensive line coach Jimmy Heggins and defensive line coach Rick Petri.

9.  Heggins has confirmed being let go.

10.  In basketball news, former UK player Mark Pope will return to Rupp Arena tomorrow as a Georgia assistant.

11.  This writer is handing out midseason awards for the Wildcats.

12.  South Carolina officials say they’re going to look into the school’s gun policies.

13.  Alshon Jeffery is a freshman All-American.

14.  The Bowl didn’t do very well in the TV ratings.

15.  The Gamecocks have some questions to answer for next season.

16.  Tennessee offensive tackle Aaron Douglas is a freshman All-American.

17.  With the recent developments surrounding the Tennessee basketball, it’s unlikely the Vols will wear black uniforms (or black hats) for Sunday’s game against Kansas.

18.  Young players are having to step up for Bruce Pearl’s team.

19.  Kansas coach Bill Self says he was impressed with the way UT’s team pulled together against Charlotte.

20.  The intensity level has been cranked up for Vanderbilt centers AJ Ogilvy and Festus Ezeli.

21.  The SEC’s new TV deals will put a big spotlight on the league’s basketball teams.

22.  This writer believes the SEC has improved in basketball and Kentucky has led the way.
