SEC East Headlines – 1/4/10

1.  Florida cornerback Joe Haden announced yesterday that he will forego his senior season to head to the NFL.

2.  Carlos Dunlap, Aaron Hernandez, and the Pouncey twins are expected to announce their plans soon.

3.  Urban Meyer’s daughter says her dad told the family that he was retiring for them.  (And then he changed his mind.)  His daughter also says that her father’s stress and anxiety “affected everybody.”

4.  In case you haven’t seen it, Chandler Parsons sank a 75-foot prayer to lead the Gators to a 62-61 overtime win at NC State yesterday.

5.  Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart — a former Georgia player — is still believed to be a target of Mark Richt.

6.  This writer — who always seems to have a bone to pick with Richt — says UGA’s coach has to land Smart or else he’ll “have some explaining to do.”

7.  Rennie Curran and Reshad Jones will probably announce their NFL intentions in the next few days.

8.  The quarterback battle for 2010 has already begun in Athens.

9.  Once again, South Carolina went belly-up in a bowl game, but this writer believes hope remains for the year ahead.

10.  Steve Spurrier said his team’s troubles started on the offensive line…

11.  And today he announced the hiring of O-line coach Shawn Elliott from Appalachian State to replace Eric Wolford.

12.  Spurrier liked the fact that Elliott didn’t even ask what he would be making when told of his hire.

13.  Elliott and the rest of the Gamecock staff will need to find some talent for Carolina’s line.

13.  Of this year’s team, Spurrier said, “We’ve never been a great team this year.  We’ve been a decent team.”  A decent 7-6 team that lost 20-7 to UConn in the Bowl and looked horrible on offense in doing so.

14.  Meanwhile, this writer from The Birmingham News believes Spurrier deserves a better fate than Carolina can deliver.

15.  While talk centers around the arrests of four UT basketball players, the team (or what remains of it) will face Kansas on CBS Sunday at 4:30pm ET.

16.  In Vanderbilt basketball news, x-rays on Jermaine Beal’s right thumb have come back negative.

17.  The Commodores will look to extend their four-game winning streak when they face MTSU tonight.

18.  Kevin Stallings has seen progress out of his team.

19.  This writer believes officials made the right call in not booting Kentucky’s DeMarcus Cousins from Saturday’s UK-Louisville game.

20.  John Calipari — not surprisingly — agrees.

21.  Calipari is glad to have an open week before opening SEC play against Georgia on Saturday.
