Foster Not Headed To Georgia

Last night, just hours after admitting that he’d been contacted by Georgia, Virginia Tech defensive coordinator Bud Foster was handed a new financial package from Tech and announced that he would be staying in Blacksburg.

“I’ve been approached for jobs — the strongest one was Georgia — and Tech came through with a package that’s going to keep me here.  I’m pleased with that.”

The likely reaction of Georgia fans is either:

a) Screw him

b) We struck out and can’t even land a defensive coordinator.

However, Mark Bradley of The AJC takes a different view.  He believes that the fact that Mark Richt went after a big name like Foster is a good sign.

But there’s another positive here for Georgia fans — money.

Foster was making $402,000 a year at Tech.  To stay, he was given a raise on top of that.  Therefore, it’s safe to say Georgia AD Damon Evans is willing to pay at least $402,001 for a new defensive coordinator in Athens.  (And yes, I’m guessing they offered Foster more than a buck raise.)

Last year, Evans was critical of the large salaries schools like Tennessee and LSU were offering assistants.  Now, it appears that he’s more willing to pay market value for a top coach.

That should encourage Dawg fans.

Kirby Smart (Alabama), Vic Koenning (Kansas State), Reggie Herring (Dallas Cowboys), Brian VanGorder (Atlanta Falcons) and Bob Sanders (Buffalo Bills) have all been mentioned in connection with the UGA job.
