Chavis To Stay At LSU

When Mark Richt said today that his search for a defensive coordinator could stretch into mid-January, we should have known that the John Chavis watch was about to end.

Now, according to LSU, it has.  Chavis will receive a raise from the Tigers and will stay in his current position as the defensive coordinator in Baton Rouge.

Virginia Tech’s Bud Foster also flirted with Georgia before getting a raise to stay in Blacksburg.

According to LSU athletic director Joe Alleva, the Tigers gave Chavis a raise last night.  Georgia had offered him about $600,000.  With bonuses, he made about $500,000 in his first year on the bayou.

“We did what we need to do to keep him,” Aleva said.  “He’s going to get a raise.”

Les Miles added, “It’s over.  This is non-issue.  John Chavis is staying at LSU.”

Apparently Richt did finally get around to talking to Les Miles late Wednesday.  “He was really just touching base.  He had already talked to John.”

This, of course, is good news for LSU.  The Tigers keep the man who turned around their defense in just one season.

As for Georgia, the Bulldogs are now known to have been spurned by Chavis, Foster and Vic Koenning who chose Illinois over UGA.  Depending on who you talk to in Athens and Tuscaloosa, Alabama defensive coordinator has also either a) turned down the Georgia job or b) shown no interest in it.

Making matters worse for Georgia is the fact that two other defensive coaches are still unnamed at this point.
