SEC Stats: Ball Security, Week Three

Ask a coach and he’ll tell you that there’s nothing more important than protecting the football.  Wasting offensive possessions and handing good field position to your opponent will get a team beat in nine out of 10 games.

So which SEC offenses are the best at taking care of the football?

We’ve crunched the numbers to see how many plays SEC offenses usually run in between turnovers.

Below are the leaders in a stat we call “ball security”:

Observations:

* It should be no surprise that Auburn and Alabama have had so much success this year.  Both teams are running more than 70 total plays per turnover.  Now that’s ball security.

* If South Carolina and Ole Miss live up to their current stats, Carolina will stand a good chance to win on Thursday night.  The Cocks are turning the ball over once every 70 plays, the Rebels once every 40.

* Sometimes turning the ball over doesn’t kill you.  Like when Florida turns it over against out-manned Troy and offense-deprived Tennessee.

* Speaking of Tennessee, the Vols and Georgia rank dead last in the conference in protecting the football.  If Georgia does not improve, don’t expect to see the Dawgs reach the 9-win plateau.
