Mark Richt Teleconference 9/23/09

Here’s what Mark Richt had to say during his conference call:

* “We’re having a pretty good week of practice.”

* Richt said he couldn’t tell from film just how tall Ryan Mallett was.  He can look over rushers.  “He’s deadly accurate.”  Mallett also benefits from good skill players and Bobby Petrino’s tutelage.

* Richt then joked that Mallett will be eligible for the NFL draft after this season.  “I would really think that it’d be a good idea for him to check that out.”

* On Georgia’s defense: “Well, they’re not playing the best pass defense in the country, that’s for sure,” but he pointed out that UGA has faced some really good passing teams so far.  “I haven’t lost faith in this bunch at all.”

* Richt is happy with his defense’s touchdown ratio inside the red zone… especially since his offense has been turning the ball over deep in Georgia territory.

* Georgia’s defense has been hurt by a number of injuries, though he said, “Everybody’s got those issues.”

* The offensive line “is getting there. … Our biggest issue up front on the negative side is the number of times we’ve jumped offsides or had holding penalties.”

* Richt thinks Arkansas will want to be more balanced on offense but the passing game was coming so early to them last Saturday that he couldn’t blame them for throwing so much.

* Richt doesn’t want his punter to start trying to drive the ball in order to stay on top of the national rankings in punting average.  Richt wants to Drew Butler to continue to get good hangtime, too… not just pound the ball for statistical purposes.
