Georgia News – 8/5/09

Stop me if you’ve heard this before: Georgia isn’t interested in individual stars this year… they’re interested in becoming a team.

Good thing, ’cause the Bulldogs have to replace 96% of their passing yards, 75% of their rushing yards and 51% of their receiving yards from a year ago.

Seriously, I’ve not heard so much talk about “team” and “teamwork” since “The Untouchables.”  Hopefully things will turn out better for this year’s Dawgs.

Georgia’s players are passionate about the fact that they’ll be a more fundametally sound, more disciplined football team this fall.

Much-maligned defensive coordinator Willie Martinez believes his unit can absolutely turn things around in 2009.

Linebacker Rennie Curran expects to see improvement, too.  “That wasn’t Junkyward Dawg defense” played by UGA last year.

Mark Richt isn’t worried about redshirts this season.  “Let’s start camp thinking in terms of everybody’s available — every true freshman’s available in those categories.”

This notes column reveals that backup quarterback Logan Gray is in a “strong position” to hang onto the #2 role.

Richt remains confident that freshman Kwame Geathers will be cleared by the NCAA soon.  “We’ve not hit a wall on it.  It’s just kind of a slow process.”

Defensive tackle Jeff Owens said “It feels great to be out here again.”
