Don’t Expect Gators & Dawgs To Leave Jacksonville

Looking at that headline, it reads like a threat.  But I’m only passing along the thoughts of The AJC’s Tony Barnhart.

Mr. Barnhart believes UGA athletic director Damon Evans is simply posturing when he talks about gauging fan interest in moving the annual Florida-Georgia game from Jacksonville.

Vince Dooley did the same thing when previous contracts with Jacksonville were due to expire.  And he got better deals from the city because of it.

With a tradition dating back to 1933, Mr. Barnhart doesn’t believe the majority of fans — Georgia or Florida — would be for moving the game.

He also tackles the big issue in this story: Some Bulldog fans want to move the game because they’re losing it almost every year.

Just as Florida fans, during their 7-17-1 streak in the series from 1964 through 1988 talked about moving the game back to Gainesville in order to get a “true” homefield advantage.

Mr. Barnhart isn’t buying any of that.  “If Georgia wants to win more games against Florida the Bulldogs have to sign better players who play better, not ask for a change of venue.”
