Around The SEC East – 4/8/09

Here are your Wednesday morning stories from the SEC East:

UF:  Florida coaches are still looking for guys to replace receivers Percy Harvin and Louis Murphy.

UF:  Here’s an overall preview of the Gators’ wide receiver position.

UF:  Basketball signee DeShawn Painter could get out of his letter of intent pretty easily if he and Billy Donovan have agreed that he can leave.  (Sources tell MrSEC.com that Painter was approached about redshirting and balked at the idea.)

UF:  Painter is known for playing solid interior defense, something the Gators lacked last season.

UGA:  Georgia should benefit from having their spring game televised ESPN.  (Ya think?)

UGA:  During that game (Saturday at 1pm EDT), be on the lookout for 5’7 running back Carlton Thomas who has been the talk of the Bulldogs’ spring drills.

UGA:  Rennie Curran and Jeff Owens are on the Lott Trophy watch list.

UGA:  Sorry, Dawg fans, but it’ll be Wendi Nix working the sidelines for your spring game… not Erin Andrews.  Attendance just dropped.

UT:  Safety Eric Berry says Tennessee’s players are “right on that borderline between confident and cocky.”  (Tony Barnhart of The AJC writes that the Vols need two more good recruiting classes before they’ll be ready to challenge for the East Division title.)

UT:  Berry will need a new running mate at safety because Lane Kiffin has booted oft-troubled senior Demetrice Morley from the team.

UT:  According to teammates, Morley missed several off-season runs and didn’t get along well with new assistant Ed Orgeron (who wasn’t his position coach).

UT:  This notes column reveals that receiver Brandon Warren was given his #1 jersey back when he started “doing things right in the classroom and around campus.”

UK:  Let’s get the football out of the way first… are Kentucky’s receivers ready to catch more than flak this season?

UK:  Jeremy Jarmon is on the 2009 Lott Trophy watch list.

UK:  Mark Story of The Lexington Herald-Leader believes Jodie Meeks would benefit from a year in John Calipari’s dribble-drive offense.  (He’s right.)

UK:  The New York Times already has Kentucky ranked #5 in the nation for NEXT basketball season.

UK:  They’ll have to do so without point guard Michael Porter, who is giving up basketball.

UK:  Here’s a look at what Kentucky’s basketball roster looks like right now.

USC:  Devan Downey is going to test the NBA Draft waters and teammated Dominique Archie could do the same (though his prospects look just as slim as Downey’s).

USC:  Could Darrin Horn’s name come up in connection to the now open Xavier job?  (I wouldn’t think so.)

USC:  According to these practice notes, backup quarterback Aramis Hillary is making strides.

USC:  Athletic director Eric Hyman and Carolina are moving forward with $49.9 million in building plans for athletic facilities on the Columbia campus.
