Around The SEC East – 4/2/09

I’m going to try to give you the quickest list of one-liners you’ve ever seen today.  Here are the headlines from the SEC East this morning:

UF:  Urban Meyer’s 2009 team seems to have a better attitude toward repeating as national champs than his 2007 team did.

UF:  Meyer doesn’t see as much depth on his defensive line as everyone else does.

UF:  Here’s a full practice report from yesterday’s work.

UF:  The Gators aren’t having an easy time replacing Percy Harvin, Louis Murphy and Cornelius Ingram from their pass catching corps.

UF:  In basketball news, Florida might play Notre Dame in Tampa next year as part of the Big East/SEC Invitational.

UGA:  Joe Cox has claimed the starting quarterback job in Athens.  Clearly.

UGA:  That doesn’t mean that freshmen Aaron Murray and Zach Mettenberger are doing well.

UGA:  Logan Gray, formerly a special teams contributor, wants to show that he’s a quarterback first.

UGA:  Nick Williams studies Rennie Curran to see how a weakside linebacker should play.

UGA:  He may only be 5’7, but tailback Carlton Thomas plays bigger than he stands.

UGA:  The Bulldogs have been so beaten up the last two year they should just change the spelling to “inGEOries.”

UK:  John Calipari is viewed by many as a complete coach… from winning games to dealing with boosters to helping with marketing strategies.

UK:  The new coach’s mission: hang banners.

UK:  Mark Story of The Lexington Herald-Leader believes UK didn’t call Calipari in 2007 because of his reputation… and that they were more desperate this time around.

UK:  Just 24 hours into the job, Calipari is already making roster moves in Lexington.

UK:  Josh Pastner will follow Calipari from Memphis to UK as an assistant.

UK:  State money will not be used to pay Calipari.  It almost never is.  And it’s one reason hand-wringing is usually misplaced.

UK:  Wildcat basketball made roughly a $6 million profit last year.

UK:  On the gridiron, Rich Brooks was fired up for the first day of spring practice.

USC:  New O-line coach Eric Wolford wants his linemen to “learn what it takes to drive a defender off the football.”

UT:  Lane Kiffin believes single-digit numbers are special, so he’s stripped the #1 from receiver Brandon Warren for some off-field “screwups.”

UT:  Don’t expect to hear about receiver Gerald Jones running the G-gun package this spring.

UT:  Kevin Cooper is making his move as UT starts using a traditional fullback.

UT:  Cornerback Brent Vinson will miss the remainder of spring practice after undergoing shoulder surgery.

UT:  While Memphis might be interested in talking with Bruce Pearl, Boston University is already talking to Pearl’s associate head coach Tony Jones.

Vandy:  Running back Jermaine Doster is working to regain his coaches’ trust.
