Around The SEC East – 3/26/09

Ready for the headlines, notes, blurbs and tidbits of a Thursday morning in the SEC East?  Good, ’cause here goes:

UF:  Tim Tebow says he’s refreshed and ready for spring practice.

UF:  His throwing motion looks about the same this year as it did last year.

UF:  Florida is battling a number of injuries as spring drills begin.

UF:  The Gators are also trying to fend off any feelings of complacency.  “It’s kind of easy to get satisfied,” said Brandon Spikes.

UF:  Torrey Davis is currently off the team, but he was arrested again yesterday for violating his probation.  But Urban Meyer has left the door open for a possible 2010 return.

UF:  The idea to post the words of Tebow’s post-Ole Miss speech on the side of the Gators’ football facility was Meyer’s.

UF:  New Tampa Bay coach Raheem Morris is “stealing stuff” from Meyer’s weight program.

UF & UGA:  Mark Bradley of The Atlanta Journal-Constitution doesn’t believe the annual Georgia-Florida football game will ever be moved from Jacksonville to Atlanta… because Dawg fans like Jacksonville.

UGA:  A third of the way through spring practice, Georgia still hasn’t found a pass rushing defensive end.

UGA:  Bryan Evans seems to have locked down the starting free safety job opposite Reshad Jones.

UGA:  I don’t think Georgia president Michael Adams is going to like a new book called, “Behind the Hedges: Big Money and Power Politics at the University of Georgia.”

UT:  Terence Moore of the AJC believes Lane Kiffin did mean to disrespect Urban Meyer last month… but in his words, “so what?”

UT:  Vol signee Nu’Keese Richardson — the man at the center of the Kiffin-Meyer war of words — says, “Don’t sleep on Tennessee.  We’re coming.”  Alright.

UT:  There’s some movement going on in Tennessee’s linebacking corps.

UT:  Monte Kiffin is enjoying being back in the college game.

UT:  Former freshman All-American (at Florida State) tight end Brandon Warren is happy with his move to wide receiver.

UT:  Tennessee, which fell from 31-5 to 21-13 this season, actually drew more fans this year than last.

Vandy:  Attendance for Vanderbilt basketball dropped in 2008-09.

USC:  Strong safety Emanuel Cook apologized to fans yesterday for being ruled academically ineligible for the Outback Bowl… and he said that he “never gave up” on his team, he “just slipped in the class.”

USC:  While Devan Downey is deciding whether to turn pro or return to Columbia, his coach says his own plans for next year won’t be greatly affected by Downey’s final verdict.  (I believe that’s called “whistling past the graveyard.)

USC:  Darrin Horn’s will definitely have to replace his top assistant, Scott Cherry, who’s the new head coach at High Point.

USC:  In his final press conference of the season, Horn says Carolina is “off to a good start,” but the program isn’t rebuilt just yet.

USC:  Horn has spoken to football signee Alshon “The Gas Pumper” Jeffrey about about playing basketball for the Gamecocks.

UK:  Kentucky’s season came to a close at Notre Dame last night, 77-67, and now the speculation about Billy Gillispie’s future can begin in full.

UK:  Kentucky president Lee Todd wouldn’t comment on Gillispie’s fate after last night’s game, other than to say he met with the coach late last week.

UK:  John Clay of The Lexington Herald-Leader belives time has likely run out on Gillispie.

UK:  Mr. Clay also says to be on the lookout tomorrow for a hanging, er, press conference in Lexington.

UK:  Jodie Meeks says he’s up in the air about returning to Lexington, but Patrick Patterson said last night, “as of right now, I want to come back.”  DeAndre Liggins will speak with his family before deciding whether or not to transfer.
