News And Nuggets From The SEC East

There are lots of ways to deal with holiday stress (see: photo at left).

Hopefully these few links from around the SEC East will help you get through the madness of Christmas returns and one-too-many-days with the family.

Florida is possibly just a few days away from winning their second national title in three years.  Robbie Andreu of The Gainesville Sun looks at the 2006 and 2008 Gators to see how they’re alike… and how they’re different.

If Urban Meyer wins another national title, will he become the nation’s top paid coach?  “You’ve got to pay them what the market allows,” said athletic director Jeremy Foley.  “The way you keep a guy is you keep him financially happy.”  Meyer currently makes $3.25 million per year, so you’d think THAT would keep him financially happy.

Georgia’s Drazen Zlovaric is happy to be playing basketball in the States, away from war-torn Serbia where he grew up.  “Just playing college basketball right now is a blessing.  From where I was when I was 5 years-old, where one minute you’re alive and the next minute you could be dead, I feel blessed.”  Good story from Roger Clarkson of The Athens Banner-Herald.

Georgia’s team arrives today in Orlando for the Capital One Bowl.  Mark Richt isn’t worried about trips to three different theme parks being a distraction for his squad.

Kentucky defensive end Jeremy Jarmon is back from a knee injury and heading home to West Tennessee for the Liberty Bowl.  “Any time you get a chance to win three bowl games during your tenure at a university, then you know you had a great time.”

Chip Crosby of The Lexington Herald-Leader profiles UK punter Tim Masthay, a first team All-SEC player this year.  His off-field charity works are even more impressive than his football resume.

Eleven USC Gamecocks are going to be playing in the third bowl game of their careers.  Steve Spurrier will tie two other coaches for the most bowl appearances by a Carolina coach when he takes the field for the Outback Bowl.  Congrats to Carolina, and this is not a knock of them (or Kentucky above), but it’s a little different day and age now that more than half of the FBS schools play in bowl games.

Adam Schefter of the NFL Network has reported that Lane Kiffin tried to hire Broncos’ quarterbacks coach Jeremy Bates, an East Tennessee native.  Is there any doubt that Kiffin’s goal is to have an NFL-heavy staff?

Bruce Pearl has as young a team as anyone in the SEC, but he’s not taken the soft schedule approach to prepping them for conference play.  “While we go through this, we know we have the toughest schedule in the country.  It’s your hope that you win enough games that you don’t put yourself behind too far.”

While some Vandy players who live far from Nashville are still collecting sizeable travel checks, others aren’t helped by Vandy’s trip to the cross-town Music City Bowl.  Rich Tomkins’ travel check?  A whopping three dollars.  Can you take a cab across town for three bucks?
